Emergency Dental Care

Dental emergencies such as cracked teeth, broken teeth, injured soft tissues of the mouth, or broken restorations can put patients in a state of panic. They can often be quite painful and result in severe bleeding. The best and most important thing patients should do in such situations is reaching out to a professional dentist at the earliest so that the condition can be treated effectively.

What are the common emergency dental conditions?

Broken or fractured teeth

A broken tooth can be very painful and may result in severe bleeding. Since the nerves within the tooth’s root canal are disturbed, they may be highly sensitive to touch. Also, the microbes on your hand can infect the tooth if you touch it. Hence, avoid touching the tooth or holding the broken piece of tooth with your bare hands. Control the bleeding using a clean piece of gauze and apply a cold pack or damn wash towel near the cheek to reduce swelling. Call our dental practice immediately so that we can stay prepared to treat you as you arrive.

Avulsed tooth

An avulsed or completely knocked off tooth would be uprooted from its socket in the mouth. Such a condition is mostly encountered in sports-related injuries or when individuals take a hard blow to the mouth when they fall. When the tooth exits the mouth, it disturbs the blood vessels and nerves in the root canal cavity. This leads to excessive bleeding and pain, which can be controlled using a piece of gauze and a cold pack. If you find the knocked-out tooth, collect it and place it in a glass of milk till you bring it along to the dentist. The quicker you act, the higher the chances of the tooth being placed back in the mouth and the tissues regrowing around it.

Injured Soft Tissues

A hard blow to the mouth, injury due to orthodontic appliances, or accidentally biting one’s tongue are the major causes of injured soft tissues of the mouth. Rinse your mouth using cold water and place a piece of gauze on the injured area. Apply pressure on it to control the bleeding and facilitate the formation of a clot.

Broken Restoration

When your restoration is too old and has worn out much, it could break or crumble when you bite and chew food. The tooth structure covered by it can become too sensitive to hot and cold foods when exposed. Hence, get to a dentist as soon as possible to get a replacement restoration bonded in place.
