Easing Dental Anxiety: Coping Methods that Can Help

Dental phobia refers to an irrational fear of dental visits. Often, this fear can prevent patients from going to the dentist for regular checkups and treatment. If you have dental fear, here are a few tips to ease them.

Speak Up About Your Fears

You should feel comfortable talking to your dentist about any fears or concerns you have before the procedure begins. Make sure you let the dentist know if you are afraid of needles or pain. A topical numbing gel can be applied prior to the procedure to help numb the area. Don’t hesitate to speak up and let them know you need their help!

Bring Distractions

It’s perfectly normal to feel a bit nervous before your appointment. However, if you feel extremely anxious or fearful, you should let your dentist know. You may have trouble getting through an appointment without help. Your dentist may recommend you take someone you trust with you to help you feel more at ease during your appointment. This person should be someone who can provide you with some distraction during your procedure or otherwise bonding with you to help keep your mind off what is happening in your mouth. You might also want to bring headphones to help block out any sounds you hear in the office, such as the sound of the drill. You might also consider bringing along your iPod to listen to your favorite music playlist while you relax in the chair. Some dental offices are adding TVs to their rooms to help patients be distracted while receiving treatment.

Consider Sedation Dentistry

Moderate to extreme dental fear can keep you from getting the care you need to maintain your oral health. Sedation dentistry is a great option for those who suffer from dental anxiety or phobia. Talk to your dentist about your options for sedation and agree on a signal you can use if you do not feel you are receiving the dental care you need. You can also bring trusted friends or family members along if you have someone you trust who can keep you calm and comfortable in the dental chair. If you are in a particularly fearful state, talk to your dentist about having sedation administered for your treatment so you can feel more at ease during your visit.
